Type 1 diabetes is a chronic condition in which the pancreas produces little to no insulin, a hormone essential for allowing glucose to enter cells for energy. Type 1 is considered an autoimmune disorder, meaning the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. This condition is often diagnosed in children and young adults, though it can develop at any age. Managing type 1 diabetes requires regular blood sugar monitoring, insulin therapy (through injections or an insulin pump), and careful management of diet and physical activity. Without proper management, it can lead to serious complications, including heart disease, nerve damage, kidney failure, and vision problems. However, with appropriate care, individuals with type 1 diabetes can lead healthy, active lives.

Type 2 Diabetes accounts for the majority of diabetes cases worldwide, comprising around 90% of all diagnoses. This form of diabetes is closely linked to lifestyle factors such as poor diet, sedentary behavior, and obesity. Diabetes poses a significant public health challenge due to its associated complications, including cardiovascular disease, kidney failure, blindness, and lower-limb amputation.
